Job Summary:

The purpose of this role is to ensure optimal availability of plant and equipment by minimizing downtime through the effective execution of preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance.

Main Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Test equipment and components to identify faults and ensure proper functionality.
  • Perform repairs on equipment and components in line with Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) standards and best workmanship practices to restore normal operation.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests to minimize equipment downtime and maintain productivity.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment reliability and reduce the risk of unexpected failures.
  • Ensure the availability of appropriate tools, equipment, and resources required for effective preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis by providing accurate information, offering recommendations, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and procedures by identifying and mitigating hazards related to assigned tasks, and escalating those that cannot be resolved immediately.
  • Supervise and mentor Artisan Assistants and Apprentices, ensuring tasks are completed effectively and skills are developed.
  • Report all incidents, injuries, and near misses in accordance with safety reporting protocols.
  • Supervise and train Artisan Assistants and Apprentices on assigned task

The Preferred Candidate is likely to have:

  • Grade 12
  • N6 Mechanical Engineering Diploma
  • Mechanical Trade Test Certificate
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Mechanical Artisan

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficient in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of pumps, gearboxes, compressors, conveyors, blowers, and other rotating equipment
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including fault-finding and component replacement
  • Skilled in shaft alignment, bearing replacement, coupling installation, and lubrication practices
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals
  • Hands-on experience with workshop tools and machinery (e.g., grinders, drill press, pipe benders)
  • Competent in diagnosing mechanical faults and performing corrective action
  • Committed to safe work practices and adherence to maintenance standards and procedures
  • Install and maintain mechanical seals and gaskets; perform leak testing and flange inspections.
  • Inspect and maintain lifting equipment (e.g., cranes, slings, hoists) and assist with statutory load testing and certifications.
  • Conduct mechanical setup, changeovers, and component replacements on automated machinery or production lines.
